Learning to Fly. vol. 5

Happy Valentine’s Day girlfriends!

Posted by Alexandra Jump on February 14, 2010

A shout out to my girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.   Yesterday I called 4 of them: Jenny, Lili, Patty and Lucy.   These four women have all had their trials in life, and who hasn’t?   But these ladies are good at reminding me who I am, how strong I am and most importantly where I am going.

Lucy has been reminding me that taking care of myself includes a bit of nail polish and hairspray.

Live with someone who has major depression and eventually the art of making yourself look like a girl again fades away.  They don’t really give a rip,  going out to a dinner dance and dressing up is NEVER on the radar, so why even go there.  I love to dance too and I allowed that to disappear from my life as well. I used to put on music in the kitchen of my East Conway house and used to dance around the table with the kids.  Dancing was a major part of my life. But  if the person you live with doesn’t like to dance, even around the kitchen, then after a while you give up and I found that I had stopped dancing. I had stopped thinking about dancing.  I had stopped doing a lot of things that fed my soul and gave me joy.

When Will invited me to an event where dressing up and dancing were on the program, I jumped at the chance.  The last time there was a dinner dance for me was perhaps 5 years ago… and 5 years is simply much to long a time to go without dancing.

Then down to DC and a bit of dress up, looking for a dress for the event.

Well,  Lucy reminds me that taking a little time to polish up a bit is a good thing too.  So in her honor, I actually went out yesterday and picked up a small pack of hot rollers,  glue (hairspray) and war-paint (foundation and lipstick) .   It will take some time to get back into the swing of things and get the right tints and tones, but Lucy will be pleased to know that I did it anyhow.  Even though I ended wearing my hair back, I put the rollers in, glued the heck out of it and then even teased it a bit to give it some lift.

And Will appreciated the effort.  Appreciate.  Hmmm.  How nice that someone noticed that you did a little something different. How nice to be told that you look beautiful.  And out we headed for the evening and I met a bunch of nice folks, had a pretty nice meal and danced. Someone even asked if I would save him a dance, besides Will!  I danced at the dinner  and at the end of the evening we returned back, and turned on the music and danced some more.  Kicked off the shoes and danced around the living room.  Danced and danced and danced.
